My Business Quit These Social Media Platforms
I’ve been re-evaluating my marketing strategy since I went on my social media detox in August 2024.
I believe that your small business marketing strategy should reflect your skills and what you’re good at, and that often too many of us place too much of an emphasis on social media.
My marketing passions lie in blogging and creating my weekly email newsletter. When contemplating reducing my social media presence, I reflected on how I can better utilize writing, which led to an avenue I’m excited to share more about. (Stay tuned!)
To make time for this new direction,
I know it’s easy to copy/paste posts from my blog and Instagram reels across these platforms, but in order to be successful on social media, you need to engage. You need to build community and communicate with your audience as well as posts from other profiles.
I’ve looked at business owners who are where I want to be, other course creators and educators. They’re on all the platforms. But the thing is, most of them have a staff.
I’m a party of one over here, and I don’t intend to hire employees in the future; I prefer simplicity.
Because I have limited time and energy to put into social media — and it’s not a big income generator for my business — I’m only sticking with platforms I enjoy and where I know my audience is.
So I’m quitting…
I already downgraded my Pinterest account from business to personal and the decision has been liberating. And today I committed to dropping:
TikTok
I’ve never liked TikTok. It’s overstimulating and too unhinged for me. While my reels typically receive more views on TikTok, my community is on Instagram. And I’d rather engage with my community than a bunch of random people who happened to find my post.
Twitter/X
I used to love Twitter, but now it reads marketing bro and thought leader wannabe. Since Elon’s takeover, the user interface is also a mess. I’ll log into dozens of notifications, and the notifications have nothing to do with me; they’re notifications that someone I followed made a post…which is what my newsfeed is for.
Threads
To me Threads is the more wholesome version of TikTok. But the same people I follow on Instagram are also on Threads either duplicating posts or sharing their random thoughts. I’d rather spend my time on Instagram.
While the marketing gurus I follow say LinkedIn is loaded with untapped potential, I’m just not feeling it. Because it’s rooted in professionalism and tends to lean towards the employed rather than self-employed, I don’t feel like my people are there.
Honestly, I don’t feel like my people are on Twitter or Threads either. (They’re definitely on TikTok, but I just can’t handle TikTok. Don’t ask me about Snapchat either. I could never figure that one out!)
It’s ok to go your own way
It’s taken me this long to take big action because what I’m being called to do goes against conventional wisdom. And FOMO is real.
But I believe in following your intuition and don’t agree with one-size-fits-all all marketing advice — especially for small business owners.
